When MakerBots print a model, any segment of the model that is not in contact with the build plate generally needs support material so that the extruded plastic has somewhere to fall. If support structures are not generated you often end up with the infamous "spaghetti print". However, these supports can leave unsightly surfaces on your model.The MakerBot can actually cope with overhang angles of 45° and below. If you design carefully, you can print complex structures that require no support. This is less material intensive, faster and gives a nicer finish. This video is a good demonstration of the way that adjacent geometry affects unsupported overhangs.
